Comedy is a craft that can be learned like any other.

This class will cover techniques for brainstorming comedic premises and finding satirical angles on even the most challenging subjects from recent news. We'll explore how to turn feelings of frustration and anger into fuel for writing humor pieces, and how to formulate jokes in ways that "punch up" and speak truth to power.

Note: Please bring one example of a satire piece on a difficult subject that you really enjoyed and bring one recent news story you would want to write about.

THIS CLASS WILL COVER:

  • Finding a comedic premise on a difficult topic

  • Learning how to use different forms as an angle into a humor piece

  • Structuring satirical jokes in ways that "punch up" at people in power

  • How and where to submit topical material

  • Ways to raise your profile as a humor writer
