Hi, Lynne. Please introduce yourself to our audience.

I've been writing all my life, for newspapers and magazines and all kinds of audiences. I keep a corduroy-covered journal from my youth behind my desk today to remind me of who I always have been. I earned my MFA from Goddard College and my master's thesis - a poetry manuscript - was published as my first book in time for graduation! Since then, I've had 7 other books published, including a second poetry collection, 6 nonfiction books and in fall of 2023, my 9th book and first novel will be published. I've been a journalist in New York, Washington, D.C., and Detroit, a marketing entrepreneur, and I've taught writing to university students, teens and adults since the mid-1990s. Now, I am a writing coach, author and entrepreneur who helps writers build their brands and create author careers! I am also the mom of 4 young adults and I live with my husband in Detroit.

What made you want to teach this specific class? Is it something you are focusing on in your own writing practice? Have you noticed a need to focus on this element of craft?

I've been teaching for WritingWorkshops.com since 2015 and I love the students who come to my classes!!

Give us a breakdown of how the course is going to go. What can the students expect? What is your favorite part about this class you've dreamed up?

I teach Finding Your Voice, Perfecting Line Breaks in Poetry, Demystifying Show Don't Tell, Writing a Book & Getting It Done, Your Author Brand, Write Like Hemingway, and so many more courses for WritingWorkshops.com! In all of my classes, I create a nurturing environment where people can gain confidence in their writing and expand their skills. I also create a writing community where you can find support, camaraderie and inspiration to quiet the doubting voices in your head.

What was your first literary crush?

In a way, Herman Wouk. I read Marjorie Morningstar in middle school and just fell in love with that book and character.

What are you currently reading?

About 5 different books!

How do you choose what you're working on? When do you know it is the next thing you want to write all the way to THE END?

Right now, I aim to write a book a year, but I divide my novel-writing time with creative nonfiction. I work where I find the flow. But when I am in the middle of a novel, I am eager to journey with the characters and see how they might surprise me!

Where do you find inspiration?

Everywhere!!

What is the best piece of writing wisdom you've received that you can pass along to our readers? How did it impact your work? Why has this advice stuck with you?

A mentor once told me, when writing creative nonfiction, to never disparage someone else in an essay because it just makes me look like a jerk. Instead, the mentor advised looking at my role in the situation and just stating the facts. It always works!

What is your favorite book to recommend on the craft of writing? Why this book?

Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way - it's not really a craft book but it is essential for any writer who ever doubts themselves!

Bonus question: What’s your teaching vibe?

Loving!
