Taught by Cara Benson, who has published work in The New York Times, Electric Literature, Boston Review, Orion Magazine, Identity Theory, The Brooklyn Rail, and is currently writing a series of short works on thinking and walking for Best American Poetry called “Dispatches from a Distance.”

Get to know Cara in our Meet the Teaching Artist series.

This online, asynchronous flash writing workshop is built for writers at any point in their journey (beginner through advanced) who want to focus on creating a batch of short pieces in either fiction or creative nonfiction – or both! An amazing abundance of short writing is being published in print and online. This course is designed to take part in this conversation.

Not only will we read, discuss, write, and revise short works, but we will also consider possibilities for publishing this writing. Each participant will have the opportunity to workshop twice. This critique will be grounded on the principles of honesty, generosity, consideration, and respect. Participants will find their own writing and revising get sharper as they hone their skills at responding constructively to others' work.

STUDENTS LOVE WORKING WITH CARA:

"Thank you Cara! This has been my favorite class from Writing Workshops. I feel like I have new, applicable tools to energize and free me up. Also, the talent in this group is legit and I’m crazy impressed with everyone here. Thanks!" -Allison E.

"Loved the workshop with Cara Benson! I learned so much about Flash writing in the course. I feared it might be challenging to have an online course with no live component. Yet, Cara did amazing work to keep it engaging. She is supportive and gives helpful feedback. Highly recommended workshop to get into writing!" -Sobhi K.

"Thank you so much Cara! I appreciate your feedback and the feedback of those in the class. I was very impressed with the content of the lessons and level of writing talents. It's been a pleasure!" - Heather B.

"This class was excellent and exceeded my expectations! Cara was encouraging and supportive and made the space very safe. The class was well structured and informative." -Rochelle F.

"Thank you, Cara! I've definitely gotten a lot out of the class and it's been really wonderful reading everyone's work and getting feedback on my own." -PD

"The community and feedback from the instructor were great, the readings were enjoyable, the structure was easy to follow and work within. Instructor and community feedback were definitely the most valuable. It's hard to find a good writing group, and sharing a couple months with other writers was the best part of the course." -Chris C.

"What a lovely, inspiring and informative class and group. And thank you, Cara, for being at the helm. I truly enjoyed it."

"So much interesting work and so many thoughtful comments. I've learned a lot. Cara, you took me to some places I wouldn't have found on my own. And your critiques are very insightful and tuned-in to the particulars of each writer. I appreciate all of your comments to me. Thank you so much Cara! And thanks everyone for good feedback, good work, and for being here!"

ONLINE COURSE STRUCTURE:

This class is entirely asynchronous which means you complete the weekly assignments on your own schedule. There are no set meeting times in order to allow for greater participation; your cohort will consist of writers from across different time zones, which allows for a wonderful diversity of voices.

Along with your weekly deadlines there is plenty of interaction with Cara and your peers within Wet Ink, our dedicated online classroom. Craft materials, lectures, reading assignments, and writing prompts are all available through the online classroom. Students also post work and provide and receive feedback within the online classroom environment.

You can get the work done as you see fit week-to-week, so it is perfect for any schedule. There are discussion questions each week inspired by the assigned readings and topics in the lecture notes. Students are encouraged to take these wherever is most compelling and/or useful for them. Cara engages with these discussions throughout the week and you will receive feedback from all assigned writing activities.
