Instructor Adam Popescu is a writer and journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times, Washington Post, Bloomberg Businessweek, Vanity Fair, National Geographic, Guardian, BBC, Scientific American, Outside, New Scientist, and more. He specializes in deeply reported narratives on power, culture, wildlife, and the changes driving our increasingly modern world—and us. He is also a published author; his first book, Nima, was published in 2019 and is based on his BBC reporting from Everest.

Who is this class for?

This online writing seminar is for aspirational as well as working writers—reporters, journalists, authors, and filmmakers—who want to sell their stories to editors. All levels are welcome, whether you're sending your first cold pitch or sharpening a pitch process you've used for years.

What to expect:

The pitch is the gateway to publication, and in this live, highly interactive nonfiction writing seminar, you'll learn the craft from a working writer who pitches consistently to the biggest publications on earth. Adam Popescu will break down how to identify a story, find its characters, master the cold pitch, and deploy actionable tactics that will make you a better pitcher the moment class ends.

This isn't a passive lecture. You'll pitch in real time in class—a lot. Students will send pitches in advance to be workshopped live on screen, so you'll see exactly how editors read your work and where pitches succeed or stall. Along the way, Adam covers the business behind the byline: how to position yourself and your ideas, including how to think about IP and story ownership.

Every student leaves this online writing class with a pitch packet of real pitches that worked (broken down by subject and publication), real pitches that didn't work (and why), plus a one-page cheat sheet on all things pitching.

What are the writing goals?

In this course, students will submit a pitch in advance to be workshopped during the seminar and will walk away with practical feedback and actionable takeaways on the language and art of pitching—as well as the business behind it and how to position yourself vis-à-vis IP and story.

TESTIMONIALS:

"Just wanted to tell you that today's workshop was excellent. You set a great vibe. It was the most interactive and helpful pitch class I've attended BY FAR. I suppose I've done a half a dozen this year, and I always learn new things, but yours was on another level in terms of helpfulness. Putting the pitches right up there and letting everyone respond—so good. Just sending a really, really glowing review. I am a happy customer :)" — Katherine, Former Student

"Adam, that was really great. Thank you so much for creating such a supportive environment where we all felt like we could share. I think that was the most helpful and most interactive course I've taken. I also really appreciated your advice to lean into the personal and even my own opinion about what I think is happening in my forestry story." — Nora, Former Student
