If the speaker is the story, and all the choices in the story come from the speaker, then the question of how to think about the creation of the speaker is the biggest question a writer faces. In this course, we'll face it together.

The speaker is the story. All the choices in the story come from the speaker. Where we begin, where we end, what goes into the middle, what stays out, and in what order.

That's a lot to figure out. So where do we start?

This seminar will deliver those tools, beginning with the notion of the "special logic" of the speaker that drives the story forward, and spending generous time on fifteen ways (and more) that the speaker can be constructed, technically and psychologically.

We'll talk about the retrospective speaker, multiple speakers, the speaker unaware, the observer-narrator, the omniscient speaker, and much more.

What You'll Learn:

  • Why every choice in the story follows from the speaker.
  • Fifteen (and more) ways to construct a speaker, technically.
  • Most importantly, how to construct a speaker psychologically, and what that has to do with the story's beginning, middle, and end.

Why Take This Seminar?
