Led by Gordy Sauer, author of Child in the Valley, a book Larry McMurtry praised as "vividly brutal and haunting, well beyond its subject matter. Gordy Sauer has a bright future ahead of him."
Opening chapters, prologues, opening paragraphs, first sentences — writers have to grab readers from the beginning. The opening of a novel or short story not only situates your readers into your fictional world, but it also sets the tone for the entire reading experience.
In this free masterclass, we will discuss some of the broad strategies for crafting compelling openings as well as read a few captivating openings from well-known authors such as Stephen King, Toni Morrison, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
Attendees will walk away with a better understanding of the craft tools that help writers generate effective openings and some concrete strategies for implementing them.
THIS FREE CLASS WILL COVER:
Understanding of craft tools such as tone, diction, setting, character, time, etc. in openings.
Concrete strategies for approaching opening sentences/paragraphs.
Concrete strategies for approaching opening chapters/prologues.
