Instructor Hillary Leftwich is a neurodivergent, multi-media writer and the author of Ghosts Are Just Strangers Who Know How to Knock (Agape Editions, 2023), Aura (Future Tense Books, 2022), and Saint Dymphna’s Playbook (Limit Zero/University of Hell Press 2025). She teaches creative writing, business writing, environmental writing, and environmental storytelling at several universities, writing organizations, and nonprofits for adults, previously incarcerated and hospitalized youth, and unhoused populations. She centers her writing around themes of class struggle, the impact of disease, ritual, and the supernatural. On the outskirts of the writing world, she is a professional Tarot reader and death worker. 

Who is this class for?

This course is for writers in any genre who want to explore the short form through Tarot’s archetypal lenses, using risk, restraint, and symbolism to generate and revise new work. Open to all levels who have a basic familiarity with Tarot and access to a Tarot or Oracle deck is recommended.

What to expect:

This two-hour seminar invites writers to explore the short form through Tarot’s archetypal lenses, blending poetic devices with narrative risk and restraint to generate and refine new work. Together we will use select Major Arcana as creative engines: The Tower for rupture, The Hermit for silence and white space, and Strength for power and tenderness, to craft pieces that balance intensity with clarity. Participants will leave with several new micros, a Tarot-based craft toolkit, and strategies for sequencing fragments into cohesive cycles.

This course is for writers in any genre who want to expand their practice through Tarot’s symbolic frameworks and experiment with flash, lyric, and hybrid forms. Open to all levels; a basic familiarity with Tarot and access to a Tarot or Oracle deck is recommended.

What are the writing goals for this class?

In this course, students will generate three to five short pieces (flash, lyric, or hybrid), experiment with Tarot archetypes as creative engines, and practice sequencing fragments into a cohesive cycle. They will leave with a Tarot-based craft toolkit, new approaches for revision, and drafts ready for further development or submission.
