Who is this class for?

This online writing workshop is for fiction and nonfiction writers who want to learn how to distill their book-length projects into a focused, effective synopsis. Whether you're preparing to query agents, submit to editors, or simply want a clearer roadmap for your draft, this seminar will give you the tools to get there. Open to all levels.

What to expect:

When an agent or editor requests a synopsis, the process of honing your novel down into such a small space can be dread-inducing. But writing a synopsis can also help you reflect on the larger themes and values of your work, tighten your narrative structure, or lay out a roadmap for a future project.

In this 90-minute Zoom writing workshop, award-winning author Meg Eden Kuyatt will use the synopsis as a frame for discussing the bones and beats of plot, as well as a guiding light through the drafting and editing process. You'll practice getting to the heart of your project through writing a one-line pitch and using that pitch to outline your synopsis. Whether you're deep in revision or just beginning to shape a new idea, this online writing class will help you see your story with fresh clarity.

What are the writing goals?

In this seminar, students will practice writing a one-line pitch for their project and use that pitch to begin outlining a working synopsis. Students will leave with a clearer understanding of how to identify the essential beats of their story and translate them into a concise, compelling synopsis.
