Who is this class for?

This workshop is for writers of all levels working with sensitive personal material, particularly memoir, essay, creative nonfiction, and other forms of personal narrative. Through her Story Work approach, GG helps writers reframe vulnerability from something to fear into creative material they can actually work with. No prior workshop experience is required — only a willingness to look honestly at the stories you feel called to tell.

What to expect:

What do we do when the material we feel called to write about feels too revealing to share?

Writing about our lives allows us to examine our experiences, make meaning of them, and transform them into art. And when we choose to share our stories, we offer up our humanity as a gift to others who may see themselves in our words. But this generous act can also make us feel exposed. We may worry about what others will think, question if the story is worth telling, or doubt if we have the ability to do it justice — all while staring at the blank page with trepidation. To protect ourselves and get words on the page, we might avoid uncomfortable topics, stay on the surface, and become so concerned with writing perfectly that we lose the heart of what we truly want to say.

In this three-hour online writing workshop, we'll explore the relationship between vulnerability and creative courage and consider what it means to write honestly and authentically without feeling that we have to reveal everything. Through interactive reflective exercises, we'll explore where our fears of vulnerability come from, our reasons for sharing our personal stories, and ways to work through the discomfort and resistance. You'll learn mindset shifts and practices that help you trust your inner guidance when you're making creative choices, and a framework for taking care of yourself as you do this meaningful work. Your most authentic and distinctive voice — and your most compelling stories — come from your most vulnerable places, and this creative nonfiction workshop will show you how to treat that vulnerability as a strength.

What are the writing goals?

In this course, students will come away with actionable tools they can use to practice writing with more vulnerability and creative courage. By exploring their creative fears and the stories behind them, they will leave with ideas and themes for future writing projects. They will also gain mindset shifts and strategies that help them respond to creative resistance with greater awareness and intention.

COURSE OUTLINE

This is a one-session, three-hour workshop that starts with a warm-up exercise followed by seven sections:

1 - Fear as Creative Material: Exploring fear, shame, self-consciousness, judgment, and the instinct to protect ourselves.

2 - The Motivation to Share: Understanding how your 'why' helps clarify what stories you're called to tell, and it guides decisions about how, when, and eventually, where to share them.

3 - The Art of Vulnerability: Exploring tools and practices that help you uncover the emotional truth of your story.

4 - From Embarrassed to Enlightened: A hands-on exercise for finding the deeper meaning in a personal story.

5 - Examination vs. Exposure: Recognizing the difference between examining our experiences and simply exposing them.

6 - Responsibility to Others: Considering the responsibilities that come with writing about other people and exploring different creative options.

7 - Self-Care and Resilience: Learning a framework for taking care of ourselves while doing vulnerable creative work and building resilience for all stages of the creative process.

COURSE TAKEAWAYS:

  • Identify the fears, beliefs, and protective strategies that can make writing about personal material feel difficult.
  • Learn ways to turn fear and self-consciousness into creative material for writing.
