Instructor Bio

Instructor John Sibley Williams is the author of nine poetry collections, including Scale Model of a Country at Dawn (Cider Press Review Poetry Award), The Drowning House (Elixir Press Poetry Award), As One Fire Consumes Another (Orison Poetry Prize), Skin Memory (Backwaters Prize, University of Nebraska Press), skycrape (WaterSedge Poetry Chapbook Contest), and Summon (JuxtaProse Chapbook Prize). His book Sky Burial: New & Selected Poems is forthcoming in translation from the Portuguese press do lado esquerdo. A thirty-five-time Pushcart nominee, John serves as editor of The Inflectionist Review and Poetry Editor at Kelson Books. Previous publishing credits include Best American Poetry, Yale Review, Verse Daily, North American Review, Prairie Schooner, and TriQuarterly.

Who is this class for?

This online poetry workshop is for poets interested in experimenting with erasure, blackout, and redacted "found" poetry. Writers of all levels are welcome, from those new to these experimental forms to experienced poets seeking fresh creative techniques.

What to expect:

Erasure, blackout, and redacted poetry are each unique forms of "found poetry" wherein a poet takes an existing text and erases, blacks out, or otherwise obscures a large portion of the text, creating a wholly new work from what remains. Erasure poetry may be used as a means of collaboration, creating a new text from an old one and thereby starting a dialogue between the two, or as a means of confrontation, a challenge to a pre-existing text. Such hybrid poetics can be a powerful form of linguistic and political resistance.

In this hands-on, experimental, generative writing workshop, you will study these varied forms of found poetry, drawing inspiration from news stories, political documents, and canonical literature. The goal is to recontextualize what has come before so as to understand, challenge, reshape, and better engage with the world around us. This online writing class provides a supportive environment for poets to explore how others' words can spark new meanings and how to compose deeply personal poems without using any of your own language.

What are the writing goals?

In this course, students will experiment with all three forms of found poetry—erasure, blackout, and redacted—drafting at least three new poems. A workbook will be provided; no outside reading is required.
